STAGE 2 ACTIVITIES

The long vowel sound.

  • 1A. When two owls (vowels) are together, the first makes the long sound, and the second is silent.
  • 1B. A silent ‘e’ at the end of a word changes the first short vowel into a long sound (e.g., hop → hope).

1A. The learners representing the letters step forward in order. Example: orange owl/letter (o) stands before apple owl/letter (a).

  • Then, the first owl calls out the long vowel sound but the second owl says nothing.

THE LONG O SOUND

NO SOUND

1B. A silent ‘e’ at the end of a word changes the first vowel into a long sound (e.g., hop → hope).

“I say nothing but the owl, which is two in front of me makes the long vowel sound.”

2. If two animals (consonants) stand between the owls, the first vowel must make its short sound (e.g., under, apple).

“We force the apple vowel to make the short a sound.”

2. Toddlers chant key reading rules.

3. Focus on the different sounds that the letters c, g, x and y can make.

  • With a magic mirror, the camel (c), goat (g), xylophone animal (x), and yak (y) reveal their other sounds.

4. Ranger Read features a cap party where toddlers wear caps to learn about uppercase and lowercase letters.
